A man who filmed his mates bashing a 16-year-old on a western suburb’s street was motivated by a “petty” online disagreement.
Luqman Ahmed, 20, of Tarneit, pleaded guilty at Werribee Magistrates’ Court on Thursday for his role in the August 2021 attack
The court heard Ahmed, who was 18 at the time of the offending, and two co-accused got out of a car and approached the male victim who was riding his bike in Truganina.
The two co-accused asked for the victim’s phone before assaulting him, punching the victim in the face, stomach and kicking him in the torso.
Ahmed stopped filming and fled the scene with another man, while the two co-accused allegedly walked the victim about 50m up the street where he handed over his mobile phone.
The court heard the attack — which was caught on CCTV — was motivated by an online disagreement.
Police executed search warrants and interviewed Ahmed on August 26, 2021, who was then charged on bail to appear in court.
According to the police interview, Ahmed showed “great remorse” and that he knew the assault would occur but not that his co-accused would steal the victim’s phone.
The court heard character references were submitted by Ahmed’s mentor, mother and uncle which described his actions as “out of character”.
The court heard Ahmed had disassociated himself from the co-accused.
It was also said in court that Ahmed was the oldest of six siblings and helped his single mother care for his 14-year-old disabled brother.
Magistrate Mike Wardell said Ahmed filming “humiliated” the victim.
“It’s disturbing....and the filming of it is horrendous,” Magistrate Wardell said.
Ahmed was sentenced to 50 hours unpaid community work with no conviction.
