We put the call out to readers and received an overwhelming response – here are their picks for where to find the tastiest pork rolls in the suburbs.
We also asked Matt Pyers and Josh Cauchi, who run Instagram page Banh Mis of Melbourne, to rate their top 3 banh mi locations.
These are their picks:
1. T&L Bakery (Swan St, Richmond) – The banh mi here is a standout due to the amazing sauce, the crispy and flavorful pork, and the addition of peanuts which adds an extra layer of texture and taste.
2. N Lee Bakery (Smith St, Collingwood) – We love the banh mi at N Lee for its freshness and the perfect balance of ingredients.
3. Bun Bun Bakery (Springvale Rd, Springvale) – The banh mi at Bun Bun is super popular, one of our most recommended and it lived up to it. The onions they include make it standout and their special sauce also helps put them in our top 3.

Luke’s Vietnamese
11 Puckle St, Moonee Ponds and 14 Edwardes St, Reservoir
There is rarely a day or lunch time that goes by without a considerable line outside of Luke’s Vietnamese, formerly Luke’s Bakery, in Moonee Ponds, all hankering for a banh mi which is considered one of Melbourne’s best.
The numbers back up their claim to fame with owner Long Vu estimating the store makes 500 of the Vietnamese classic every day.
It has been a year since he opened the Moonee Ponds bakery, which is debuting its new signage and name next week, while his cousin runs a new store in Reservoir.
“It’s been a family business for three generations … I use all my grandma’s and mom’s recipes to make the marinades and stuff,” he said.
“It was challenging during Covid times but we have a bit of a customer base and we had really lovely support through that time.”
It all comes back to family recipes which Long Vu learnt from his grandmother and mother as part of the three-decade old family business which is still thriving today.
Another point of difference can be found in the cooking process.
“I use my mum’s recipe for the charcoal barbecue pork, I like to cook everything on charcoal I think it makes it different from the rest,” he said.
“We’ve stuck with the authentic way to cook the meat and prep the vegetables so we just stick with what we know best and it seems to be working.”
