Armed with one of the best names in the business, 2 Fat Greeks delivers an authentic experience that has locals salivating for more.

Tucked away on Napier St, passersby would have seen a packed venue with barely a spare seat in the house ever since Mitch Kargas and Adam Demase started the restaurant two and a half years ago.

The secret to being one of the state’s best greek restaurants? Learn off the people who truly know greek food.

“The machinery that we have to cook the meat I’ve imported from Greece, the machinery we use to filet the meat I’ve imported from Greece so I’ve tried to make my restaurant as authentic as possible,” Mr Kargas said.

“Even down to my chefs, one of my main chefs, this is what he was doing in Greece and thankfully he’s come down to support me.

“Everything we do is in house made, right through to our meats to our pita, everything basically.”

The secret at 2 Fat Greeks to a good souvlaki is that everything compliments each other from the pork and the chicken to the sauces for a flavour-packed punch.

Mr Kargas believes the other secret to the Essendon restaurant's success isn’t related to food at all.

“Everyone will say its the food and we’ve got awesome food but it’s also the atmosphere, it’s the staff, everyone in my restaurant plays a massive part to make it a great restaurant ... without a good team, your restaurant is nothing,” he said.

If you’re looking for a Greek night out, Triakosia is the place to be.

The restaurant has gained a cult following for its open mic style bouzouki nights on Wednesdays where players from across the city gather around a table and jam while dinner is served.

With a souvlaki on the plate, bouzoukia playing in the background and people clearing tables at the front to dance, it will make you feel as though you’re on an island in Greece.

Like the music, the souvs are in a league of their own, with the owners opting for a more traditional take of the famous street food which includes tomato, chips, tzatziki, mustard, onion and a choice of lamb, chicken or pork.

If the traditional options aren’t your thing Triakosia (which translates to 300 in Greek) also serves beef and calamari souvs for those a little more adventurous.

If a wicked combination of juicy meat and fresh ingredients all wrapped up is what you’re after – Yassas will well and truly hit the spot.

This chain has four stores across Melbourne – and they opened at Eastland in the spot formerly occupied by fellow souva chain Jimmy Grants after it went under a couple of years ago.

Manager Brett Thompson said his store prided itself on dishing up fresh ingredients, and not using pre-packaged slabs of meat.

But above all, he said including tzatziki sauce was essential.

“Everything else is just an add on,” he said.

“It’s all about not trying to serve things super quick, and taking the time to prepare it properly, because then you’re going to get a better souvlaki.”
