A historic general store, and the only building on commercially zoned land in Ferny Creek, is for sale.
Ferny Creek General Store, which Bell Real Estate describes a place with “a storied past, a visionary future”, is looking for a new owner.
Bell Real Estate Belgrave director Elliot Bell said locals were keen to see someone revitalise the store, which sits at the gateway to the Dandenong Ranges.
“They want someone to breathe new life into it and retain its existing character,” he said.
The original character, along with the outdoor facade includes original hardwood timber floors.
It is also the first commercial property on the western side of the mountain.
Mr Elliot said the building was almost 100 years old and had been a general store, liquor store and Australia Post outlet throughout that time.
The building was last purchased in 2018 and Mr Elliot said the plan had been to turn it into a restaurant, but that didn’t work out.
Before that sale it had been owned by Matt Spooner for 20 years.
“It’s an iconic building. People know it,” he told the Herald Sun in 2018.
He said the building was quite big with living quarters out the back, which could be converted into more shop space.
“It could be turned into anything, a cafe, or organic fruit and vegetable shop,” he said.
“The area is second to Phillip Island for tourism.”
The building, on Mount Dandenong Tourist Rd, has a price tag of $800,000 to $880,000.
A recent renovation saw the internal structure repainted and is an open plan blank canvas.
On an almost 900 sq m corner block there is also garage space, two offices, rear storage and a bathroom and laundry area.
If desired there would also be room to transform the space into a four bedroom home.
