A man in his 30s is in hot water after he was busted in an allegedly stolen tow truck before he then hit a police van in Melbourne’s west.

Williamstown police spotted the allegedly stolen truck, a 2005 Nissan MK245, on the side of Boundary Rd in Laverton North about 3am on Thursday.

They found the driver, a 34-year-old Sunshine West man, asleep at the wheel, who woke up and tried to drive away.

Officers rolled out stop sticks and the tow truck came to a stop about 150m down the road, before it allegedly reversed into a police divvy van parked nearby.

The man was arrested and taken to a nearby hospital under police guard.
