A man attempted to break into a western suburbs soccer club before returning in the dead of night to target a vending machine.

Hobsons Bay police have released CCTV of then attempted burglary at Altona Magic Soccer Club on Mills St last month.

Police say a man tried to gain access to the club rooms via a side door about 11.50am before he fled on a blue motorbike.

It is believed the same man returned later that night, about 9pm, before he broke into a vending machine outside an undercover area.

The man stole an unknown amount of cash and fled the scene.

Investigators have released images and CCTV of a man they believe can assist with their investigation.
