Werribee’s furry friends will have a new place to run free with a $1m off-lead dog park set to open by the middle of the year

Work has begun on the park at Bulban Rd, which will feature two fenced areas with large open lawns and play zones, as well as trees, soft landscaping and circuit paths.

The project is being partly funded by a $275,000 state government Suburban Parks Program grant.

Most of the 21,030 registered dogs in Wyndham City are based in Werribee, something Councillor Robert Szatkowski hopes will translate to a positive response to an additional dog park.

“There are currently 18 dog off-leash areas provided across Wyndham with various levels of amenity, including unfenced and fenced spaces, and destination spaces,” he said.

“Once complete, the Bulban Road Dog Off-Leash Park will provide a large open space for dogs to play, exercise and socialise — and will give Werribee dog owners more choice when taking their beloved pooches out to play.”

Werribee local and owner of seven-month-old Dachshund Daisy said dog parks were a “great way” for dogs to socialise and provides a safe space for owners uncomfortable taking their dogs elsewhere.

“They are really good, especially for people who are a bit more nervous about taking their dog for a walk but in there they know dogs are pretty well behaved,” she said.

“I think the more options people have to take their dogs the better, especially after Covid and all the people who bought dogs during that time.”
