Angel Paws adoption day: Charity rehoming 60 kittens and puppies

Looking for a fur-ever friend? A Townsville charity is holding a ‘mega’ adoption day to rehome up to 60 kittens and puppies to deal with the Christmas influx. See where.

It will be raining kittens and puppies at Angel Paws on Saturday as the charity holds a mega adoption at its Kelso headquarters.

The organisation’s general manager Larissa Huxley said up to 60 kittens and puppies will be available to be rehomed.

“It is going to be huge, it’s going to be double the number of animals we usually have for adoption days,” Ms Huxley said.

“Come along have a pat, have a cuddle and see it the kitten or puppy will be the right fit for your family.”

She said the charity always saw a huge influx of kittens and puppies in the Christmas period. This year, the charity had a rush of surrenders before the holidays, many of which were too long to rehome.

“So now in care we have got 54 puppies and 64 kittens on top of about 30 adult dogs and cats,” Ms Huxley said.

“We normally sit at around 110 down to 98 but a couple of litters’ changes that number very quickly. After winter we see a spike in breeding.

“People then want to keep their little puppies and kittens and play with them, they are a bit novel and then all of a sudden it is Christmas we are going away we have got to get rid of these kittens and puppies.”

She said it happens every year, and the easy solution is to de-sex your dogs and cats.

Community support is vital for the work Angel Paws does, according to Ms Huxley.

“We are the only rescue in Townsville that has got a community shelter now and the number of animals in need is always there and we can’t do it on our own.

“At the moment we have a backlog of puppies and kittens waiting to come in but we can’t anything else in until we move some.

“Kittens are $210 to adopt including up to date vaccinations, worming and parasite control and desexing when they are between 5-6 months of age, puppies with the above for $495 to adopt.”

Angel Paws is located at 2/3 Inglong Street, Kelso.
