A Townsville-based charity offering abandoned pets a second chance at life has appealed for help transform a rundown old building into their new headquarters.
Since its founding in 2014, Angel-Paws’ small team of staff and a huge network of foster carers and volunteers, has worked tirelessly to find forever homes for cats and dogs from as far north as Tully, west to Mount Isa, and south to Bowen.
In addition to pressures created by the housing crisis, relationship breakups, and domestic violence, Angel-Paws North Queensland president Clayton Cooke said the festive season saw a spike in dumped pets, after being given as Christmas gifts or when owners left on holidays – putting them at risk of being euthanised.
Traditionally relying on foster carers’ private properties to house the animals, Angel-Paws took the plunge to purchase an old dog and cat boarding kennel on Southwood Rd, Stuart, two months ago.
Mr Cooke said the shelter would provide quarantine facilities, a veterinary clinic for desexing, and space for 60 dogs and 30 cats, buying them time while foster carers were found.
“It hasn’t been operational for a long time, so it’s quite dilapidated, and we need significant work to get it up to speed,” Mr Cook said.
“We’ve done a fair whack of work with about $40,000 to $50,000 of volunteer work done on the property so far.
“That’s a combination of roofing, plumbing, electrical, and bricklaying.”
Generous organisations from around Townsville have donated paint, bricks, abrasive blasting, with Rotary Townsville donating a ride-on mower to manage the one acre block.
“The community has been helping us, which is awesome, but if we can get some additional assistance from people with skills and time, then we’ll get the property operational in the next month or two,” he said.
