Tributes are pouring in for a “generous man” who died on a country road near Timboon on Sunday.
It is believed Reg Dumesny was returning from a car show when he crashed off Timboon-Port Campbell Rd just before 3.30pm on Sunday.
The 65-year-old, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene.
Facebook user Karen Cameron remembered Mr Dumesny as “a generous man who always thought of others”.
She said Panmure was “mourning one of its best”.
Mr Dumesny was named the Moyne Shire Australia Day Citizen of the Year award in recognition of his “outstanding service to the community” in 2016.
“It’s been said that every small town needs a Reg Dumesny – Panmure is lucky, it has the original.
“Reg donates hundreds of hours each year to the town and its improvement. He’s an action man full of enthusiasm and energy, his hard work encouraging others to follow,” it said at the time.
Mr Dumesny volunteered with the SES and CFA and was also an “integral member” of the Panmure Action Group.
“He’s the first to help and often the last to finish, not through inaction but the commitment to see a job done,” the council said.
His “tireless” community work included on the Panmure War Memorial and community park, for which he spent his on time and money to plan, dig, water, clear and sow.
He was also a team leader in three Variety 4WD Treks which raised more than $40,000 for Variety - the Children’s Charity and while “a man of few words” he was the MC at the local ANZAC Day parade.
He was also known for delivering hay to drought, flood and fire affected farmers across the state and organising working parties to help farmers in need.
A local Timboon woman, who asked not to be named, saw a helicopter land on a patch of grass near where the crash occurred.
Sadly Mr Dumesny died before he could be airlifted to hospital.
The local woman believes the site where he rolled his car was a “rough” road surface and may have posed a risk.
The exact cause of the crash is still being investigated by police.
Corangamite Shire Council members closed the road after the crash occurred, allowing police to further investigate the situation.
There is also speculation around whether Mr Dumesny had a medical episode prior to the crash.
This will be confirmed in a coroner’s report.
