A mas has died due to smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in his retirement home in Victoria’s southwest.
Emergency services were called to a house on Hampden St in Terang around 7.30pm on March 29.
Police, paramedics and six CFA units responded to the incident.
The fire was brought under control within an hour.
A 67-year-old man was located deceased inside the home.
Warrnambool crime investigation unit detective acting sergeant Derek Verity said the man was the home’s resident.
“As a result of the smoke, he has passed away,” acting sergeant Verity said.
“It was only a minor fire — and it’s only a small unit — so it would have filled with toxic smoke pretty quick.”
The one bedroom unit was located in a retirement village.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined but is not believed to be suspicious.
Acting Sergeant Verity said the early indication was an “electrical fault”.
