Australia's growing drug crisis

A man has been flown to hospital after a fire broke out at a Camperdown home allegedly growing cannabis.

Emergency services and a company were called to an address on Manifold St about 6.30pm on Tuesday night.

A CFA spokesperson said Fire Rescue Victoria and nine CFA units from Camperdown, Noorat, Cobden and Weerite extinguished the blaze but a neighbour who was trying to put out the fire suffered a medical episode prior to emergency services arriving at the scene.

The man in his 60s was treated by paramedics and flown by helicopter to the Geelong Hospital in a stable condition.

Crews wearing breathing apparatuses were able to get the blaze under control just after 7pm.

CFA hazmat crews remained on site for a couple of hours where the area was declared safe just before 9.30pm.

“Once the fire was out the property was examined and a clandestine hydroponic setup was located. No other person was located,” a police spokesperson said.

The police spokesperson also said the man who attempted to put out the fire was not involved in the possession of the drugs at the address.

The investigation is ongoing.

Police urge anyone with any information or have been a witness of a crime to contact Crime Stoppers Victoria on 1800 333 000.
