A dangerous giant rock column at a Peterborough beach has been removed due to the danger of it collapsing.

Parks Victoria area chief ranger Michael Smith confirmed the works to pull down the rock column at Wild Dog Cove began on Tuesday and were now completed.

“Contractors used an airbag system to bring the column down onto the beach. Further work is still required to stabilise and break up the column to make it safe,” Mr Smith said.

The column was removed due to a large crack forming in the rock.

A video shows the rock column collapsing onto the ground before splitting into three large pieces.

Wild Dog Cove has been closed since November last year, after an inspection found the rock column at one end of the beach posed a risk of falling.

“We’re asking people to continue to stay away from the beach until it is reopened for their own safety,” Mr Smith said.
