Police are hunting the driver of a black Volvo who deliberately ran over a teenage girl in a terrifying attack in Melbourne’s north.
Graphic CCTV footage shows the car appearing to slow and come to a stop as the victim crossed the road, before it suddenly accelerated, knocking her to the ground, and running over legs.
The black Volvo, which is alleged to be a 2018 model or newer, entered the Roxburgh Park bus terminal off Thomas Brunton Parade about 6.50pm on Saturday night.
The car started to slow down as the 16-year-old teen ventured onto the road but then accelerated towards her.
The victim, who is Vietnamese, was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where she remains with lower body injuries, was visiting her sister for school holidays in Footscray when she took the wrong train and ended up at the Roxburgh Park railway station.
Merri-bek detective Senior Constable Alexandra Adler said police suspect the accident was a deliberate act but not targeted.
“From the CCTV that we've recovered the car appears to slow and even come to a stop. The young girl crosses the road believing it safe and as she steps out onto the road the car accelerates and almost swerves towards her,” she said.
“She was just trying to get to the train station to get home and this incident happened. It’s terrifying that at the time she was by herself. She doesn’t know anybody and she’s knocked over and left on the ground.
“She‘s extremely lucky with her minimal injuries and thankfully, there were witnesses around who came to her aid and got her into an ambulance and off to hospital but she’s still traumatised by it.”
Senior Constable Adler said police believe the driver of the car was alone.
“If the driver is out there I want to tell you that we are looking for you. We‘re going to find you. So come forward, turn yourself in now and do the right thing,” she said.
“We would like anybody that was there that did witness this to come to give us information about what they saw. We‘re also appealing to anybody who may have seen this car before after the CCTV dashcam footage.”
Anyone who witnessed the collision has CCTV/dashcam footage or information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
