Half a century’s worth of expertise is what keeps loyal customers coming back to Wendy Ford.
The Mordialloc raised hair master has made magic across Melbourne since she was 24 years old, first starting an apprenticeship in Mentone in 1970.
A former student at Mentone Girls’ Secondary College, Ms Ford has proudly paid tribute to her local community through her craft, operating nine salons across southeast suburbs including Malvern East, Cheltenham, Chelsea, Parkdale and Keysborough.
Ms Ford travelled the world as the judge of world hairdressing competitions in Germany and Japan, and was inducted into the Hairdressing Hall of Fame.
She has also been voted as the Leader’s best hairdresser of the inner south.
“I reckon we’ve got the best clients in the world … they’re fabulous people who come in with high expectations and I hope we can meet that,” Ms Ford, 74, said.
“We’ve got a very diverse team … our receptionist Nina, long hair stylists, makeup artists and two young business partners doing colours and cuts.”
Ms Ford’s one remaining salon, Wendy Ford Hair & Beauty Parkdale, has stood proudly on Como Pde W for 25 years.
The shop boasts a beautiful glass ceiling, courtyard area and a long, narrow floor which can hold up to 16 clients at once.
The business is also part of the Sustainable Salon movement, which aims to recycle leftover bottles, foils and hair.
Ms Ford said her business and Schwarzkopf Professional Hairdressing (PH) Club had allowed her to make lifelong friends locally and interstate.
“I just love it here … I’ve had so many opportunities,” she said.
“You get to know people forever, they become your friends. We’ve become part of people’s families.
“My life is really lucky.”
