Frankston’s top hairdresser revealed: Rebecca Wood, Colour Collections Wells St Frankston

The votes are in and the best hairdresser in Frankston has been decided by Leader readers. The voting was close but one hairdresser took out the title.

Rebecca Wood’s passion is to help others.

But after receiving some devastating news in February, she was the one who needed support.

Just nine months ago the hugely popular Frankston hairdresser found herself in a doctor’s office, booked in for an ultrasound after suffering from abnormal stomach pain.

Her world shook when she was told she had Grade 1 bladder cancer.

“It was a complete shock … I thought I just had weird pains,” Ms Wood, 40, told the Leader.

Ms Wood quickly underwent lifesaving surgery where her tumour was cut out, before battling six weeks of intense immunotherapy treatment.

Fast forward nine months and the Colour Collections hairdresser and mother of one is now living her healthiest, cancer-free life.

She has also been voted in as the Leader’s best hairdresser in Frankston.

“My boss here and the team have been supportive, as well as my long standing clients … they are my world,” Ms Wood said.

“(The diagnosis) completely changed my life … I don’t drink anymore, I eat healthily and drink less coffee.

“The support everyone has given me, by just calling, writing cards or sending a text message, has been just huge.”

Rebecca Wood, 40, beat bladder cancer this year and is now developing a hairdressing education program.

Ms Wood moved to the Wells St salon last year, seeking a challenge after running her own business for eight years in Hastings.

She was crowned as Mornington Peninsula’s best hairdresser in 2018.

Now feeling her best, Ms Wood spends Sundays cutting hair for the elderly in local aged care homes and working on her two-part education program, Rebecca Wood Hair.

The hands-on experience will see Ms Wood travel to regional Victoria to help educate budding hairdressers about everything from running a business to the skills of the trade.

“There’s a huge staff shortage for hairdressers at the moment and there isn’t a lot of training out there for people in regional areas … a lot of people can’t afford to travel to Melbourne or Sydney for courses,” she said.

“My passion is to get out into the areas where there is no education … I want to get in there and take the stress out of them and make them feel like a part of the industry.

Ms Wood also wants to help guide young apprentices through the first stages of the job.

“The generation below me has been brought up on mobile phones, so coming into the salon they might not have as much confidence and people skills … I also would like to change the mindset of old school bosses who don’t want to train kids,” she said.

“I want to show kids that you can make a great living out of hairdressing.”
