Tributes have poured in for an “amazing” Greenvale grandfather after it was confirmed he died in the devastating Turkey earthquake.

Suat Bayram was one of more than 36,000 people killed in the magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Turkey and Syria.

The Hume community remembered a “loving” man as the Bayram family mourned the loss of a husband, father and grandfather.

Mr Bayram was a keen runner and completed 159 parkruns, with 155 of those at Highlands parkrun as well as local and interstate events.

Running partner and Hume councillor Chris Hollow shared an emotional tribute to his long-time friend and neighbour.

Cr Hollow remembered how Mr Bayram, just weeks after major back surgery, completed a 10km fun run in a show of his strength and determination.

“Quite often we’d catch up in the early hours of the morning, I’d usually catch him at the end of his run while I’d be starting my run which gave us the chance to catch up and talk about whatever was on our minds,” he said.

“Suat to me, was someone who was a gentle, humble but beautiful human who was always up for a chat.

“Suat showed that by being present and being true to himself, he won the hearts of so many people who are missing him dearly.”

The Highlands parkrun community said he would be “immeasurably missed” after his passing which left them with a “heavy heart”.

“A familiar face to many of us, a wonderful encouragement to all on the course and a running buddy and good friend,” they said.

“We pass on our condolences to his family and friends through this difficult time. May he rest in peace.”

Cr Carly Moore recounted how Mr Bayram, who was a friend of her husband, had been so well regarded in the days following his death.

“People described him as a wonderful man, as very kind and knowledge … that he had a warm nature and a happy, infectious smile,” she said.

“His passing will certainly leave a very big hole in the hearts of many.”
