The Roys have made a barnstorming start to the VTCA campaign, sitting 11 points clear on top of the Division 2 ladder after winning two of their opening three matches outright.

Glenroy routed Werribee Centrals twice in Round 1 and carved through St Andrews Pascoe Vale in Round 4, establishing itself as an early flag favourite.

“All we have done for ourselves so far is just set ourselves a platform for the year,” coach Anthony Greaney said.

“That’s all it is. Work hard to Christmas, hopefully get a few more wins and really launch into the finals.

“You’ve done nothing now until you really get there.”

Greaney lauded the form of paceman Nick Pantland, who had taken 10 wickets in two games to Round 4 including a haul of 4-23 against St Andrews Pascoe Vale.

“He’s a bloke that wants the new ball and wants to bowl long spells early,” he said.

“He’s a real workhorse and he just wants to keep working for the team and take wickets. Give him a challenge and he just takes it on.”

Spinner Steve Goodwin (16 wickets) and all-rounder Jacob McKinnon (eight wickets) were also ranked in the top-three bowlers in Division 2 last week.

Greaney warned star tweaker Goodwin was “not at his best yet” and praised the impact of McKinnon since he returned to Sewell Reserve after a year off.

“To have two outrights and another win in a one-dayer against a pretty good team in Pascoe Vale (Hadfield) is a bonus,” he said.

Greaney said Glenroy’s unbeaten start had caught him by surprise after the club opted to reinvest in local talent during the off-season.

While No. 3 batsman Sikander Sharma crossed from Craigieburn, the Roys otherwise prioritised building from within.

“The best thing about Glenroy, our twos are undefeated as well,” Greaney said.

“We’ve got blokes to come back through the twos that will be pushing for the ones at Christmas time.

“The biggest thing, they are all local players.”

Glenroy’s Round 5 fixture against Williamstown CYMS starts this weekend.
