Kew was trumpeting the arrival of former Premier Cricket batsman Andrew Chalkley as a key addition in the off-season.
But it was cousin Tom Chalkley who made an impression on Saturday, claiming outstanding figures of 7-43 as Kew scored a 61-run win over Caulfield.
The right-arm paceman bowled unchanged as the Fielders were dismissed in the 43rd over at Caulfield Park.
Chasing 154, the hosts resumed at 0-18 and were knocked over for 93 in 42.1 overs.
Ross Suri took the first two wickets, including the scalp of Jacob Thorne for a duck, but it was Chalkley’s day from that point.
Caulfield had no answer to Chalkley’s relentless pressure, using seam-friendly conditions after the start of play was delayed by 45 minutes.
Only champion batsman Graeme Rummans provided any resistance, contributing more than half of his side’s total.
Rummans was the last man out for 49 from 99 balls and with three boundaries.
Dale Denny (15) was the only other player to get to double figures.
Chalkley crossed from Carlton, where he has played in the lower grades, in the winter and will be a handful for VSDCA batsman if he can replicate the Round 2 performance.
“We bowled very well, particularly Chalks bowling to a bloke like ‘Rummo’,” Kew captain Chris Weeks said.
“Chalks kept challenging him, he beat him a lot of times throughout the day and eventually got his reward at the end when Rummo was having a bit more of a go when they were nine down.
“He’s a fit young bloke and he’s bloody competitive. He put in a real good pre-season and for him to get the rewards was awesome.
“It was one of the better spells of fast bowling … it was a good performance by us in the field and with the ball.”
Young wicketkeeper Liam Powell also impressed, taking five catches in place of injured gloveman Nick Chamberlain.
It was Kew’s first win of the season after a Round 1 defeat against Oakleigh.

“To put in a good performance against a quality side is a positive for us,” Weeks said.
“It just means when we show up with the right attitude that we can compete with anyone.
“That’s the way the competition is this season. Everyone is very even and for us, I know that’s one thing we’re looking to improve on is bringing the right attitude and mentality.
“If we do that, we’ll be very hard to beat.”
