Brent Kremer has Keith James in his sights.

The decorated Croydon gloveman is one wicket away from equalling the VSDCA record for the most dismissals in Sub-District Cricket.

Kremer sits on 528 dismissals and needs just one more catch or stumping to equal the record set by James, who played between 1958-59 and 1980-81.

James claimed 283 catches and 246 stumpings across his 21-year career at Balwyn.

Kremer is set to equal the record this weekend and will likely claim the milestone outright after the Cockies were dismissed for 110 on Saturday in the Round 1 clash against Werribee at Croydon Park.

The Tigers are 1-49 in reply.

Kremer’s first game for Croydon was in 1999-00 and he has played 254 matches, taking 456 catches and making 72 stumpings.

VSDCA secretary Ken Hilton said the record would not be broken.

“When Keith James broke the record, probably people were saying back then that this record would never be broken,” Hilton said.

“The modern player, for the longevity in the game, it’s not the model going forward.

“Guys don’t seem to play as long these days, plus there are players that come in and play a couple of years of Sub-District and go onto Premier Cricket.

“They don’t have that continuity at the one club for very long periods of time.”

Croydon committee member Paul Bullen said Kremer’s concentration, leadership and attention to detail had been the keys behind his success.

Croydon had hoped Kremer would break the record on the weekend but its supporters will have to wait for day two for the champion gloveman to have a chance at the achievement.

Bullen said that Kremer would achieve the milestone in a competition regarded as the second best in the state added further value to the record.

“He’s still probably the hardest trainer in his craft and is always seen catching, doing everything with the gloves, grabbing people to belt balls at him, getting in the nets,” Bullen said.

“The last 10 years, he has probably been one, two or three in the association for dismissals each year, which is remarkable for performance and longevity.”
