Box Hill captain Michael Vozzo says paceman Brendan King should be considered among the competition’s best bowlers after his five-wicket haul against Noble Park on Saturday.

King’s 5-38 from 22.4 overs and Muhammad Saeed’s immaculate return of 3-33 from 28 overs gave the Mustangs a tense three-run victory at Pat Wright Senior Oval.

Falling to 9-127 chasing 149 for victory, Noble edged towards victory through Kalhath lippuli Arachige and Andy Berman.

When the score reached 145 they were a boundary shy of victory.

But lippuli Arachige set off for a single halfway through the 77th over only to be sent back. Vozzo pounced on the chance at mid-wicket, underarming the ball to wicketkeeper Brodie Eccles who found lippuli Arachige short of his ground.

King’s haul took him to 20 scalps for the season, stepping into the spotlight after the defection of spearhead James Pearson to Brunswick and retirement of Andrew Blake at the end of 2016-17.

Vozzo said King had elevated himself to among the competition’s top bowlers.

“I think he is really starting to prove that to himself and he has been leading our attack, he’s our most experienced bowler, even though he is in his late 20s and he’s our most experienced First XI cricketer,” he said.

“He’s always been the lesser-light and I would say the opposition probably went after him a little bit because of the other bowlers we had around him, but he’s starting to prove himself as one of the league’s best seam bowlers.”

The Parkers picked up at 3-42, with in-form skipper Luke Wintle looming as a key player.

Rob Ewen (8), Robbie Johnston (1) and day-one star Nilo Perera (0) fell cheaply, and when Wintle clipped a ball behind square and was caught for 43 (off 140 deliveries, with 5 fours), the hosts were 7-96.

That became 8-107 when Anthony Salomon (7) departed.

It was a costly loss for Noble Park: it could have jumped to third given that Plenty Valley was beaten.

Box Hill, sixth on the ladder, bowled with discipline and was sharp in the field.

“The most important thing is all the young guys are learning to win so every win is important … it’s becoming habit,” Vozzo said.

“We’re happy to go into every game as underdogs and happy for the opposition to underestimate us because we’ve been playing well that way.”
