Sub-District cricket: Graeme Rummans hits century for Caulfield against Brighton

Graeme Rummans has made many centuries in his run-filled cricket career and he added another on Saturday, 129 not out for Caulfield in Sub-District cricket.

IT was a match for left-handed openers.

On day one at Caulfield Park, Brighton reached 9-245 thanks to young Englishman Ben Johns’ 105.

On Saturday the great Graeme Rummans more than answered Johns and the Tonners, batting through for 129 not out as the Fielders eased to 5-248 and a five-wicket victory in the south-west section.

At the age of 42 the former first-class player continues to make runs stylishly and plentifully.

His century was his third for Caulfield (whom he joined in 2016-17), his first this season and lifted his run aggregate past 500.

Rummans faced 198 deliveries in a 265-minute stay and hit six boundaries.

The outfield was slow on day one and, with late-week rain, even more sluggish on Saturday, requiring a lot of running between the wickets.

Rummans and captain Jacob Thorne put the Fielders well on the way to victory with a partnership of 168 for the second wicket.

Thorne’s 69 also took him past 500 runs for the season (he also has 38 wickets).

The skipper was run out by a direct-hit as he came back for a third.

But Rummans pushed on for yet another century in his run-filled career.

“It was good for him to see it out, because he’s made a lot of scores between 50 and 80,’’ Thorne said of the former Victorian and NSW batsman and three-time Ryder Medal champion.

“He batted the whole innings and put the game to bed.

“He’s always really calm and collected when the team’s under the pump, and he’s able to hit a boundary when required, which is a good skill to have, turn a good ball into a bad ball.

“Pretty good player,’’ he added with a laugh.

Caulfield has peeled off eight consecutive victories and is six points clear on top of the ladder.

Cheers: James Wild, Brian Ambler and Rodney Bird after the Monders’ victory at EE Gunn Reserve.

After stumps at EE Gunn Reserve, Ormond captain James Wild and paceman Rodney Bird shared a beer and a photograph with former club president Brian Ambler to put the cap on an emotional match for the Monders.

Ambler’s brother Steve, Ormond’s team manager and scorer, was farewelled last Tuesday after collapsing while out running 12 days earlier.

Wild had an outstanding match.

On day he collected 6-68 off 23.4 overs against Williamstown.and on Saturday he cracked 90 not out as the hosts chased down 178, finishing at 5-181.

The right-hander received 178 deliveries and put away 9 fours and 2 sixes.

Ormond was shaky after losing Luke Heath for four and Gihan Perera for three, but Luke Rainone (35 off 91 balls) and Wild added 54 for the third wicket.

From there Wild saw the Monders through to a victory that kept their finals hopes ticking.

It was his fifth half-century this season.

At Elsternwick Park, the improving Moorabbin claimed its second successive win, scooting to 3-198 in reply to Elsternwick’s 178.

Binners captain Romain Grenville (71) and Sri Lankan professional Vishva Wijeratne (91) had an opening partnership of 135.

English all-rounder Karl Carver clipped 21 not out.
