He’s played a good level of cricket, and on Saturday it showed.
Former Ormond Subbies premiership all-rounder Dave Dervan plundered 247 not out in Skye’s C2 side, becoming the first player in the club’s 74-year history to score a double century.
“I don’t think I did anything too extravagent, I just batted,’’ Dervan said after propelling the Kookaburras to 4-381 off 40 overs against Carrum Downs.
“It was an amazing day. By the end of it I was gassed.’’
Re-writing the record books, Dervan surpassed Greg Morgan’s long-standing club record of 186.
The 44-year-old also broke the club’s season aggregate record of 646 runs (held by Sean Derrick) as he zoomed to 927 runs for the season, at 185.
His stunning season also includes three centuries, 110, 119no and 128no.
With six games to, plus finals, Dervan looks certain to pass 1000 runs — and he could even give the MPCA all-time season aggregate record (believed to be about 1300 runs) a nudge.
Dervan, who scored 50no in Ormond’s drought-breaking 2014-15 VSDCA premiership, said he joined Skye this season to rekindle his love of cricket.
“I didn’t expect it to go this way to be perfectly honest,’’ he said.
“Over the last few seasons I’ve found cricket to be zapping a bit of fun and enjoyment for me, so I decided this season to drop back a few grades with some work mates.
“And I’ve started to get the smile back, started to get a bit of buzz back.’’
In a memorable day for Skye, both its First XI and Second XI won outright on Saturday, with club captain Ishi Ahmed taking a hat-trick on his way to a five-wicket haul.
And former club president Rob Gruar blitzed 120 not out in the fourths’ rousing run chase win over Tyabb.
Chasing 250, Skye rushed to 3-265 off 44 overs, with big-hitting Gruar belting 7 fours and 13 sixes to raise his bat for his seventh century.
Opener Cameron Clapton made 71.
“It was just an amazing day for the club,’’ Dervan said.
Dervan is also a fine indoor cricketer, playing 13 years for Victoria and also going on two World Cup tours with Australia.
