A hostile spell of fast bowling has put Le Page Park’s premiership quest back on track in SECA’s Longmuir Shield.

Panthers paceman Oshan De Silva tore through Kingston Heath’s top order in the last round of the season on Saturday, grabbing 5-43 off 19.5 overs, to send the visitors tumbling all out for 69 in 38.5 overs.

In reply, Le Page Park — coming off three straight losses — hurried to 4-118 off 28 overs by stumps, a first innings lead of 49, with skipper Steve McConchie (39no off 40 balls, with 4 fours, 2 sixes) punishing some loose bowling.

The game continues next Saturday.

The dominant day was a timely boost for the Panthers ahead of March.

De Silva ignited Le Page Park with a high-class display of fast bowling. He was involved in five of the first six Kingston Heath wickets to fall, and he finished with a season-first five-for.

De Silva can bowl fast when he wants to, but on Saturday he looked to bowl within himself and on a good length.

Le Page Park off-spinner Kasun Weerasinghe chimed in with 3-11 off eight overs, and Hemantha Alles bowled beautifully to take 2-14 off 11 overs.

Panthers gloveman Lachlan Carroll took two catches, as did Lachie O’Meara.

Carroll later opened the batting and made 20, and Alles made 42 in support of McConchie, as Le Page Park took control of the match, maybe even positioning itself for a tilt at outright points next Saturday.

MUNNINGS MAGIC

Jack Munnings’ five-for gave East Sandringham a slight edge in its finals-preview clash with Bentleigh Uniting. Munnings sent down 27 overs of off-spin, taking 5-62, to help dismiss second-placed Uniting for 182. Jordan Hesline was also prominent with two catches and 2-6 off 4.3 overs with his leggies. Bentleigh Uniting No. 4 Josh Bregazzi smacked 12 fours and 2 sixes in his entertaining 78 off 75 balls, and Craig Short added to his excellent season with 30. Having to face four overs before stumps, East Sandy reached 0-16, with James Keys on nine.

HEALY BLASTS OFF

Ladder leaders West Bentleigh was 0-83 off 22.4 overs against Brighton Union when wet weather halted play at Hurlingham Park. Clean-hitting opener Luke Healy, playing only his second First XI game for the season, hit 10 boundaries on his way to 60no off 64 balls, while Callum Cathcart (15no) played the support role.

WHITE UNBEATEN

Only 10 overs were played in the CHAG-Bentleigh ANA match due to rain. Bentleigh ANA skipper James White was unbeaten on 29 off 35 balls (with 4 fours) in a score of 1-38. Sam Simpson was the wicket-taker for CHAG.

COOKE CRACKS TON

Mackie’s James Cooke blasted his second century of the season to help his side put up 238 against Elwood in Woolnough Shield. Cooke went in at 3-32 and made 109 off 142 balls, with 10 fours and 1 six. Blake Eklund (45) and skipper Sam Frawley (26) were also in the runs.
