ONE of Victoria’s largest cricket associations is set to come together and dig deep all in the name of supporting the state’s emergency services.

The Ringwood and District Cricket Association (RDCA) will stage a marquee event on Australia Day – the RDCA Emergency Services Cup – to raise funds and awareness for the Victorian State Emergency Service and Country Fire Authority.

The January 26 event will be hosted at Chirnside Park Cricket Club’s Kimberley Reserve and will feature an afternoon of male and female charity cricket matches made up of RDCA, SES and CFA representatives.

RDCA president Michael Finn said the cause was close to many in the association.

“The RDCA has a really large footprint – one of the things we pride ourselves on is actually being a community, and I think within that community, we need to honour every component of that,” Finn said.

“Geographically, 80 per cent of the RDCA is in a very high fire zone, and so as a result of that we have a lot of people who are members of the SES or the CFA.

“They are the true heroes that get out there and put themselves on the line.”

A bumper day is planned for the RDCA on January 26.

All funds raised on the day will be donated to the SES and the CFA.

Several local and state politicians are set to attend, while there’ll also be a barbecue and a range of children’s activities available.

Finn said the event had been some 12 months in the making.

“Twelve months ago we thought because we should and because we can, we should do something to contribute and make a high point of the work that they (SES and CFA) do, and see if we can create an annual event to not only raise some money, but awareness as to the great work they do and express our gratitude,” he said.

“It’s been born out of us realising that we are much, much more than a cricket association and because we should play our part and we do.”

A Go Fund Me page will also be available for donations.

It is hoped the RDCA Emergency Services Cup will become an annual event.

“We’re really passionate about creating something … we’re absolutely committed to doing an annual event for a very, very worthy cause,” Finn said.
