MPCA: Ollie Hanrahan signs with Sorrento and Nathan Lambden for the Sharks’ T20 side

Sorrento has secured two Premier Cricket players — one for the entire season and the other, who is arguably Victoria’s fastest bowler, for its T20 matches.

What a boost for Sorrento Cricket Club.

The Sharks on Monday confirmed they had signed Prahran all-rounder and ex-Hawthorn footballer Oliver Hanrahan for the 2024-25 Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association season.

Sorrento has also secured Casey South Melbourne paceman Nathan Lambden as a marquee player for its Twenty20 matches.

Hanrahan, 25, is a lively pace bowler, athletic in the field and can hit a long ball.

He played 11 matches at Prahran last season, including one First XI appearance, and forged a friendship with Dimitri Mascarenhas who was the True Blues’ fast bowling coach.

Former England player Mascarenhas was appointed Sorrento’s new senior coach in May and now Hanrahan has followed him to the Sharks.

Sorrento president Ben McDonald was thrilled to secure Hanrahan, whose work ethic is well known.

“Yep, very happy,” he said.

“He’s only 25 and comes highly regarded. He’s playing all season.”

Hanrahan played 29 AFL matches across five seasons for the Hawks before being delisted at the end of 2021.

He soon returned to cricket, joining Kingston Hawthorn for the 2022-23 Premier Cricket season.

Hanrahan once described himself as a “cricket nut’’. As a schoolboy, he had been promising with bat and ball, joining Victorian Premier Cricket power Melbourne after coming through at the strong Brighton Union club.

Lambden — regarded as one of the fastest bowlers in the state — will continue his burgeoning Premier Cricket career with Casey South Melbourne while playing T20s at Sorrento this summer.

“Nathan will play most of the Twenty20s,’’ McDonald said.

Lambden took 48 wickets — the most in Premier Cricket — for the Swans last season.
