MPCA 2020-21: Zacc Klan grabs five wickets as Baden Powell routs Red Hill for 58

There was pre-game drama — and then bowling brilliance — at Baden Powell on Saturday, while a Langwarrin spinner made it 11 wickets in two games. And Baxter has made a slick start to the MPCA season.

A brilliant bowling display by Zacc Klan helped Baden Powell overcome some pre-game drama and score an eye-popping win over Red Hill at Overport Park on Saturday.

Baden Powell playing-coach Craig Entwistle had to pull out with a back complaint and his place was taken by evergreen John Harrison, who got the call-up as he was about drive to Red Hill to play in the seconds.

Winning the toss and batting, Baden Powell made a shaky start at 3-20 but Rhys Elmi (37), skipper Travis Kellerman (24), Tyson Jackson (20) and Harry Maxwell (19) led a rebuild as the home side posted 7-139.

For Red Hill, Tom Collett (3-24) and Glenn Collett (3-28) bowled well.

In reply, Red Hill made a disastrous start when opener Matt Merrifield was dismissed second ball by Klan, who was bowling gun-barrel straight.

He crashed through the Red Hill top order, dismissing five of the top six, and he also got a run out, as the visitors slumped to 7-33. There was no way back for the Hillmen.

Nathan Rice claimed the prized scalp of Simon Dart for 24 as Red Hill was shot out for a paltry 58 in 27.4 overs.

Klan, who has joined the Braves from Dromana, finished with 5-17 off eight overs, with four maidens, while late inclusion Harrison chimed in with 2-1 off 2.4 overs.

“Zacc was great,’’ Entwistle said.

“He bowled exceptionally well with a bit of fire and control.’’

Leg-spinner Matt Prosser turned in another stunning performance to bowl Langwarrin to victory over Mornington at Alexandra Park.

After taking 5-4 in last week’s opening round, Prosser captured 6-13 off 6.4 overs as Mornington went from 0-49 to 114 all out in 36 overs.

Langwarrin recruit Cameron Sharpe (3-22 off 8 overs) triggered the collapse with the first three strikes.

Prosser and fellow tweaker Robbie Lancaster (1-20 off 8) then bowled superbly in tandem. For Mornington, Zac Garnett (26), Shane Hockey (24) and Matt Foon (30) did best with the bat.

In reply, Langwarrin opener Tom Hussey (47) hit the ball sweetly and Prosser capped a brilliant game with a quick-fire 33 as the visitors achieved victory in the 25th over, reaching 4-115.

After two rounds, Prosser’s season bowling figures are breathtakingly good: 11-17 off 11.4 overs.

Reigning premier Sorrento is stuck on the bottom of the ladder, winless, after being shot out for 68 by Baxter.

Sorrento’s dreary day began when Baxter paceman Dale Irving knocked over Corey Harris and Bobby Wilson in the space of three balls.

Sorrento opener Jedd Falck (25) dug in for 83 minutes but the Sharks’ innings expired in 27th over.

All of Baxter’s bowlers impressed — Irving (2-11) and coach Adeel Hussain (1-10) made early inroads and Bobby Parslow (3-12) and leggie Yohan Maddege (3-17) kept the pressure on.

In reply, Baxter champions Daniel Warwick (35no) and Chris Brittain (21no) guided the home side to 1-70 off 22 overs.

In Peninsula, Pines, Somerville and Long Island remain undefeated after a tightly contested Round 2.

Pines batting ace Harley Peace-Stirling cracked 56 to steer his side to victory over Moorooduc.

The Ducs posted a competitive 156 but Pines ran it down in 36 overs, thanks to an explosive start by Damien Lawrence (26) and a 70-run third wicket partnership between Peace-Stirling and Connor Jackson (22).

Earlier, Pines’ bowlers combined well, with excellent spells from Liam Jackson (3-13), Connor Jackson (2-27) and Lawrence (2-24).

Long Island skipper Tom Boxell (32 and three wickets) was in the thick of the action in his side’s 22-run win over Seaford Tigers.

Boxell, Zac Wilson (42) and Aiden McKenna (27) set up the Islanders’ 179.

Seaford Tigers made a strong start to the run chase as No 3 Ash Mills blitzed 69 (7 fours and 1 six) but Boxell’s telling blows and three run outs ended the Tigers’ reply at 157 in the 38th over.

Five Somerville bowlers took wickets as the Eagles flattened Flinders for 66 to record a 104-run victory.

Somey put up 170 on the back of opener Craig Black’s crisp 39 (6 fours) and Ryan McNamara’s late flurry of 32 (with 3 sixes). Caleb Nennstiel snared 3-34 for Flinders.

In reply, Flinders was dismantled in 22 overs, with skipper Matt Gale’s 14 being the top score. Somerville’s bowlers were razor sharp, led by Aaron Kaddatz (2-9 off 8), Jarryd Lymer (3-15), McNamara (2-20) and Adrian Ridout (2-13).

All five of Somerville’s senior sides won for the second straight week, meaning coach Jugga Nagel again had to reach for his wallet and shout all captains their choice of drink.

“I’m going broke,’’ he quipped. “But I don’t mind.’’

Heatherhill opened its winning account with a dominant six-wicket win over Main Ridge.

A classy knock by skipper Kristian Miller (69no) guided the Hills past the Cougars’ 145, Heatherhill making 4-146 in 31.4 overs. Declan Albert also impressed with 37.

Earlier, Brett Maxwell (4-27) and Jack Lavery (3-21) bowled Heatherhill into a winning position. For Main Ridge, Eddie Aarons (41) and Will Noall (30) did best with the bat.
