MPCA: Langwarrin spinner takes 5-4, Herrick makes fiery debut

Bang, straight into it...several players turned in stunning performances as local cricket hit off on the Mornington Peninsula on Saturday.

Langwarrin leggie Matt Prosser captured 5-4 to send Baden Powell crashing all out for 61 in a spectacular start to the MPCA Provincial season on Saturday.

Prosser’s match-winning spell came after former Victorian paceman Jayde Herrick made a fiery debut for Langwarrin, grabbing the first two wickets to have the Braves wobbling at 2-7 at Lloyd Park.

Langy skipper Travis Campbell (2-14 off 8) also bowled beautifully, but it was Prosser’s five over burst of spin, control and subtle variation that snuffed out Baden Powell’s hopes of a fightback.

Prosser took the last five wickets as the visitors tumbled from 5-53 to 61 all out in 27.1 overs. For Baden Powell, opener Coen Chernishoff dug in for over an hour to make 23.

In reply, Langwarrin made a blazing start when Herrick dispatched the first ball of the innings to the boundary.

He clipped 13 off 12 before falling lbw to Baden Powell newcomer Zac Klan.

But that was the only hiccup as Langy swept to victory in the 13th over, reaching 1-62, with opener Tom Hussey (27no) and Campbell (17no) looking assured.

Country footy legend Simon Goosey made his Mornington First XI debut at the age of 52 — and celebrated a rousing Bulldogs win over last season’s grand finalists Mt Eliza.

The Goose wasn’t required to bat or bowl as Mornington, after posting 8-127, shot out a disappointing Mt Eliza for 61 in 27 overs.

Mornington’s former skipper Matt Foon was outstanding, making 53 and then taking 3-21 off 8 overs in a man-of-the-match performance.

Tom Panich also impressed with 21 and a run out, while young Will George, also on debut, looked the goods in snaring 3-24 off 8, despite suffering a groin injury, and ex-Frankston Dolphins captain Shane Hockey chimed in with 3-2 to rubber stamp the victory.

Hockey also took a spectacular diving catch to give the Bulldogs their first wicket of the season.

Old Peninsula — formerly Peninsula old Boys — made a dream start under its new name when it defeated reigning premiers Sorrento by 22 runs at McFarlane Reserve.

A minute’s silence was held before the start in memory of Sorrento legend Geoff Morgan, who passed away in June after a 72-year association with the town’s cricket and football clubs.

Old Peninsula won the toss and batted — and put up an excellent 4-197 off its 40 overs, underpinned by an 81-run opening stand between Tom La Brooy (46) and Dylan O’Malley (44). No 3 Wade Pelzer top scored with 55, while John Forrest (21no) and prized recruit Justin Grant (20no) pushed the total towards 200.

In reply, Sorrento was on track at 1-101 before falling short at 9-175. Opener Corey Harris top scored with 49 off 63 balls (with 4 boundaries and 1 six), while Jake Wood (33), Bobby Wilson (31) and Liam O’Connor (25) contributed.

James La Brooy (3-39), Will Crowder (2-42) and Rhys Whitling (2-23) shared the wickets for the Pirates.

A crisp 70 by new skipper Sammy Mullavey and a bag of four wickets by young paceman Will Borthwick helped Baxter to a 13-run win over Provincial newcomer Red Hill.

Mullavey, who has come across from Heatherhill, led from the front, with support from Dan Warwick (26) and Joe Rule (23) in a score of 9-175.

Borthwick bowled with sizzle to grab the first two wickets and then returned to clean up the tail as Red Hill (162) fell short in reply.

He could have had an even bigger bag after being denied two wickets because of no balls.

Spinner Justin Bridgeman chimed in with 3-38.

Borthwick will be on a hat-trick against Sorrento next week after taking the last two wickets in successive deliveries.

Red Hill champ Simon Dart played and made 44 to give his side a sniff, along with opener Luke Robertson (62).

In Peninsula, Long Island’s three spinners combined for 2-41 off 20 overs to make scoring tough for Heatherhill and set up a resounding eight-wicket win.

Recruit Zac Wilson was Scrooge-like as he took 0-10 off eight overs with his off-spinners to put the clamps on the visitors, while fellow tweakers Tom Boxell (2-21 off 8) and Aaron Barrett (0-10 off 4) also impressed as Heatherhill was kept to 7-132 off 40 overs. Brett Maxwell did best for the Hills with 34 not out, while newcomers Don Pulukkuttiarachchi and Thisuraka Akmeemana made 25 apiece.

In reply, Long Island lost only two wickets on the way to achieving victory in the 31st over, making 2-136, with Nick Jewell (45), Boxell (43no) and Wilson (28no) showing the way.

Somerville was dismissed in 35 overs but still managed to defeat Main Ridge.

The Eagles put up 142, with opener and new Collingwood VFL coach Craig Black cracking 34 and Madu Perera 30.

Main Ridge made a disastrous start to the run chase, slumping to 2-6, and was dismissed for 90, with the top score being 14 by Gareth Wyatt.

Somerville’s bowling was razor sharp, with Aaron Kaddatz returning 1-4 off eight overs with the new ball, Jarryd Lymer 3-20 and Justin Allsopp 2-8.

Pines wicketkeeper Riki Anstiss snaffled six catches in a dazzling return as the Piners beat Seaford Tigers by six wickets.

The Tigers were knocked over for 88 as Jackson Mockett (3-21) and Liam Jackson (3-11) struck telling blows. Former Frankston Heat paceman Billy Humprey took 2-11 in an impressive return.

In reply, Pines rushed to 4-90 off 25.2 overs, with Lai Leaunoa (32), Damien Lawrence (28) and Harley Peace-Stirling (23no) hitting it crisply.

Champion batsman Shane Beggs peeled off an unbeaten 65 to guide Flinders to a seven-wicket victory over Moorooduc.

Chasing 153, the Sharks (3-155) won with nine overs to spare, with Beggs, skipper Matt Gale (35) and Kane Hawkins (20) showing the way.

Earlier, Dwayne Field was the pick of the Flinders bowlers with 3-16 off eight overs, supported by Gale (2-23), Hawkins (2-46) and Mason Mail (2-31).
