The Country Basketball League is heating up.
We’re now officially pass the halfway mark in some divisions as teams jostle for a position as finals action looms closer.
Here’s a look at the top performers from week five.
Zac Dunmore, Ararat
There’s a reason Dunmore is the Redbacks’ skipper – because he stands up when his team needs him most. He produced back-to-back 30-point games on the weekend as Ararat maintained their unbeaten start to the season through five games. Again, he was able to prove he can score in a variety of ways.
Maddison Egan, Maryborough
Made an appearance in this list in round 1 and Egan was again at her brilliant best after 31 points in her side’s win over Melton. Limited to just three games so far, Egan’s scoring power could push the Blazers into title contention.
Vincent Monaghan, Korumburra
The Wildcats were able to move into fifth position at the weekend on the back of a pair of strong performances from Monaghan. He had 26 and 21-point outings as Korumburra overcame Lakes Entrance and Sale in a double header weekend.
Sarah Ritter, Mt Gambier
Mt Gambier has played two and won two this season and they have Ritter to largely thank for their unbeaten record. She scored 27 points in her side’s win over Terang at the weekend with all the damage coming from inside the three-point line.
Kobe Shewry, Myrtleford
Shewry played an important role for the Saints at the weekend as they won their first two games of the season against Wangaratta and Mansfield. The impressive shooter finished with 54 points across two games, his first appearances for the season, to give a preview of what he could add to this Myrtleford side going forward.
Billy Smythe, Castlemaine
Smythe’s weekend performances had a bit of everything. In the Cannons’ win over Mildura, he showed his ability to step out and hit the three-ball with three shots from deep. Against Swan Hill, he was brilliant at getting to the line as he made 10 free throws.
Tayha Watkins, Seymour
In just her second appearance of the season, Watkins again showed why she is one of the best pure scorers in the competition. She finished with 27 points as the Lady Blasters ran out two-point winners in a thriller against Wodonga.
Sam Whelan, Maffra
With two opportunities to step out on the court for the Eagles, Whelan made the most of his opportunities top scoring in both of his side’s games. He has proven to be one his side’s best threat from deep this season after hitting 11 threes across both games.
Emily Winter, Millicent
Millicent had to wait for its season and Winter is already making up for lost time. She finished with a game high 34 points as the Magic got off to a perfect start against Portland.
Sienna Wynd, Maffra
One of the young guns of the competition, Wynd continues to put together an impressive season in Maffra colours. As the Eagles recorded two wins at the weekend, Wynd played an important role with 32 points across both games. The Eagles coaching staff would have been happy with the even contribution they received from their side.
