Country Basketball League’s top players from round 1

There were some huge displays in Round 1 of the Country Basketball League with one of the state’s rising stars enjoying a 42-point game. Here’s our top 10.

What a stunning return it was to Country Basketball League action.

From the state’s far west to the northeast, the competition was back bigger than ever with a series of stunning performances.

We’ve gone through game-by-game and picked our top 10 (five male, five women) performers of the week.

Rhys Brown (Maryborough, North West Men)

Opposition teams will need to be on high alert if Brown has the ball beyond the arc. He hit seven shots from deep across the weekend as the Blazers got off to the perfect start in a double header.

Jordan Canovan (Morwell, Gippsland Men)

Despite the Magic going down by 16 points against the Southern Peninsula Sharks, Canovan ensured his side was never out of the contest. He finished with 39 points, including four threes in the round 1 defeat.

Zac Dunmore (Ararat, South West Men)

The Redbacks were far too good for Warrnambool on the opening weekend and co-captain Dunmore was right in the thick of the action. He finished with 29 points including seven from the free throw line to produce an important showing.

Maddison Egan (Maryborough, North West Women)

Finished as the competition’s leading scorer for the weekend with 27 points as Maryborough got its season off to the perfect start against Macedon Ranges.

Jett Garnham (Wonthaggi, Gippsland Men)

The scoring machine couldn’t have asked for a much better start to his season as the Coasters kicked things off with a double header. Graham scored a remarkable 40 points against Lakes Entrance to establish himself as a player to watch.

Evie Hughes (Myrtleford, North East Women)

Played an important role for the Saints in their victory over Shepparton. Hughes led the way with 18 points in an evenly spread team performance.

Jessica Kivimets (Melton, North West Women)

Made a strong impression in her side’s competition debut with 22 points. Kivimets already appears to be one of the Thoroughbreds’ leading threats from deep.

Samantha Labros (Traralgon, Gippsland Women)

Fresh off a Big V Basketball season with RMIT, Labros has enjoyed a terrific start to her CBL campaign. She finished with 31 points as Traralgon powered to a big opening round win against Lakes Entrance. Labros had 31 points. Will face former side Maffra this weekend.

Austin Shelley (Moe, Gippsland Men)

Moe enjoyed a thrilling 10-point win over Warragul to start its season and the Meteors have Shelley largely to thank for their perfect start. Shelley lit it up from deep with 41 points to lead his side to a 100-90 win on Sunday afternoon. He hit three triples.

Sienna Wynd (Maffra, Gippsland Women)

An exciting player with a bright future. Wynd scored 42 points, including four triples in her side’s huge win over Wonthaggi as she showed why she has a big future ahead of her. Also represents Frankston in the VJBL.
