A drug-trafficking, woman-bashing thug with a daily ice habit has been jailed after pleading guilty to more than 30 charges.

But Tyson Lawrence is now walking free after serving 85 days on remand for his series of violent, meth-fuelled crimes.

The 24-year-old from Wantirna South pleaded guilty to drug trafficking and possession, assault, theft, driving and bail-breach charges at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard since May last year there had been multiple instances where he either attacked, abused or threatened his partner.

On June 6 last year he went to the woman’s Narre Warren house and grabbed her around the neck in an effort to retrieve a necklace he had bought her.

He then went into another room to steal $500 he knew she had, and when she tried to stop him he kicked her in the hip, leaving her walking with a limp.

Five days later on June 11 he again went to her house and pushed her onto the ground, causing a hand injury.

On November 25 he pinned his partner to the bed, holding her down by her throat before she managed to get free and call police.

He again went to her house on December 2 and pushed her hard into her car in the driveway, causing her to hit her head on the vehicle, before striking her face with the back of his hand.

On December 27 he again went to her home, and when she told him she was pregnant, he squeezed her stomach tightly while carrying what is believed to be a handgun.

This year, on January 17, he went to her house, punched her in the face, grabbed her neck and forcefully pushed her head into the corner of a wooden shelf.

Each time he ran off when police were called.

His luck came undone on January 22 when he went to Heidelberg court for driving matters and was arrested and remanded.

As well as anger issues he also has a drug-dealing problem, twice being caught trafficking cannabis.

On September 5, 2018 police saw him in the driver’s seat of a car parked at Hungry Jacks in Knoxfield.

Inside his vehicle was a black backpack with four bags of cannabis weighing a total of 1.18kg.

Lawrence, a cross-fit training fanatic, legged it from the scene.

On August 20 last year police responded to a suspected loiterer in the Mernda area.

They found Lawrence with 12g of dried cannabis, 0.9 of ice, prescription medication, digital scales, snap lock bags and $1025 in cash in a backpack.

His defence lawyer said his time spent in custody had been especially onerous due to the COVID-19 situation and during his sobriety he had gained significant insight into his crimes for which he was “not shirking responsibility”.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the drug trafficking and assault-related offending, which he described as high in “severity, frequency and nature” were serious, but also believed Lawrence’s remorse was genuine.

“He didn’t seek to blame other people (in his doctor’s report) and accepted full responsibility for his actions, he didn’t gild the lily,” Mr Vandersteen said.

Lawrence was jailed for 85 days, reckoned as time served, and released on a community corrections order.
