Home schooling and lockdown challenges have not stopped schools across Melbourne’s southeast from being ranked among the best in Victoria.
Data shows public and private schools in Kingston, Greater Dandenong, Casey, Berwick, Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula featured in the top 100 Victorian schools for VCE results in 2020.
The schools have been ranked by their median study score — which is out of 50 and shows how the entire class performed in their final year.
The data revealed private schools largely outclassed public schools in the area, with Narre Warren Sth P-12 College the only public school in the area to make the list of top 100 performers in the state, landing at 66.
Haileybury Girls College was the top performer in the southeast – and eighth in Victoria – with a median study score of 36.
The Keysborough school edged ahead of Berwick’s select entry Nossal High School which also scored 36 but had a lower number of students with scores of 40 and above.
Haileybury principal Derek Scott said students had produced the second-best set of results in the school’s history.
“This is a remarkable achievement in a year in which they faced, and met, many challenges,” Mr Scott said.
Oscar Jeffrey and Jun Wen Lin achieved the highest possible Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) of 99.95.
Another Berwick school, St Margaret’s School, also had a stellar year recording a median study score of 35 and a Victorian ranking of 17.
Haileybury, Keysborough, Toorak College, Mt Eliza, and Mentone Girls’ Grammar also achieved median study scores of 35 and landed at 18, 34 and 40 respectively on the state list.
Toorak College principal Kristy Kendall congratulated the class of 2020 for their outstanding results and for showing “optimism, commitment and camaraderie” throughout the year.
“2020 will forever be etched in the history books and I hope these fantastic results serve as a reminder of all that they can achieve no matter what obstacles they are faced with,” Ms Kendall said.
She said exceptional scores were achieved across the entire Year 12 cohort, with a median ATAR of 87.35 and an unprecedented 72 per cent of students achieving ATARs of 80 or higher, placing them in the top 20 per cent of the country.
Also making the top 100 schools in the state were Mentone Grammar (study score of 34), Peninsula Grammar (33) and Woodleigh School (33).
Woodleigh principal David Baker said the Class of 2020 performed brilliantly, especially Dux. Jussy Poyser who achieved an ATAR of 99.75 and Jazzy Evenden with an ATAR of 99.55.
Mr Baker said the school had a diverse range of success stories ranging from students who scored highly or received early offers to study interstate, to others who transitioned into apprenticeships and traineeships and those who struggled, worked hard and completed their education against the odds.
Other standout success stories included David Le, the first Mordialloc College student in history to achieve a 99.95 ATAR score.
Here are the 2020 VCE results for schools in the southeast, based on VCE class median study score and percentage of scores 40 and above.
