15 YEAR OLD STUNS WITH NEAR PERFECT SCORE

A 15-year-old student from Kardinia International College has notched a near-perfect ATAR score, making him one of the highest, and youngest, achievers in the state.

Kardinia International College student Zane Gates, 15, who received a 99.8 ATAR, said he didn’t check his score until midday, despite results coming out five hours earlier.

“I don’t really care about it all that much, I’ve never been someone to worry about a certain number, but I guess 99.8 isn’t bad,” Zane said.

“I’m much more proud of everything I’ve learnt this year rather than the number.”

The Jan Juc teen, who skipped kindergarten, grade two and year 10, studied math methods, physics, specialist maths, English, Japanese, legal studies and algorithmics.

He said he hopes to study maths or law at a university next year.

His remarkable achievement comes as Mordialloc College’s David Le achieved the first 99.95 ATAR score in the school’s history.

David, who will turn 18 in March, said he was hoping for a score of 99 but was delighted with 99.95 which will ensure entry into biomedicine at Melbourne University.

“A friend asked me if I was happy and I hadn’t even looked but when I saw my mark I was in complete shock,” he said.

David completed two subjects last year and four this year at the government school.

He said while the lockdown had its challenges it did help him focus.

“There were ups and downs. It gave me freedom to focus to work hard on my subjects and work independently,” he said.

“But it was a struggle because we have not been able to socialise.

“I would like to thank the teachers who helped during the year.”

Mordialloc College principal Michelle Roberts said she was delighted with the school’s first 99.95 ATAR and the overall performance of students.

“Overall, our students have performed exceptionally – such persistence and positivity amid the challenges of remote learning. Remote learning may not have always been easy but through the collective efforts of everybody we made it work.”
