Non-select entry public schools have outclassed some of Victoria’s top private campuses, as government schools make up a fifth of the state’s best 100 for VCE results.

Victoria’s top VCE schools have been revealed in an analysis of their results.

The median study score — which is out of 50 and shows how the entire class performed in their final year of school — has been released for every campus.

While five select entry public schools made the top 50 (Mac.Rob, Melbourne High, Nossal High, Suzanne Cory and John Monash Science School) it was the fixture of a series of non-select schools that featured more impressive.

East Loddon P-12 — in the tiny town of Dingee, north of Bendigo — was the top rated public campus, ranking in 55th position across the state.

While it only had 17 VCE students, it was an impressive feat when comparing against the results of elite Melbourne colleges with greater resources.

Narre Warren P-12 made the list in 2020, coming in at 66th place, while East Doncaster Secondary reached 70th position.

Mortlake P-12 also made the list in 78th spot with its 23 VCE students achieving a median study score of 33, followed by Casterton Secondary in 79th place.

Rounding out the list, Box Hill High, University High and Glen Waverley Secondary pulled a position in the top 80.

There were a total 18 public schools in the top 100 for VCE in 2020 — almost a fifth of the most successful campuses.

That number was down slightly on 2019, when 21 public schools made the top spots.

Meanwhile, the three schools that took out gold, silver and bronze with the VCEs best median study score in 2020 have now all made the podium two years in a row.

Bialik, Mount Scopus and Ballarat Clarendon College have been revealed as the top ranked schools in a challenging 2020.

The same three co-ed campuses took out the top three spots in 2019, then with Ballarat Clarendon named number one, followed by Bialik and Mount Scopus.

Girls’ schools claimed more than half the top 20 spots, while metro Melbourne schools also dominated.

The top 20 featured just three public schools — all of them select entry.

Bialik College principal Jeremy Stowe-Lindner said he was thrilled the non-selective school was the best performed school in the state with a median score of 38.

“We have a graduation cohort with we call Menschlich which is a Yiddish term which means decent and active in the community as well as hard working,” he said.

“We know the greatest achievers are those who don’t lock themselves in a room but do good things.”

Here are Victoria’s top 100 VCE schools for 2020, based on VCE class median study score and percentage of scores 40 and above.
