Mornington Peninsula locals are being warned not to take on intruders after a shot was fired during an attempted armed robbery.

A Tootgarook man, 73, was lucky not to be seriously hurt after a bullet was fired through his Kareela Drive living room window early Tuesday morning.

Police said moments before the shot was fired the man had gone outside to investigate noises at the front of his property.

Armed Crime Squad Detective Acting Sergeant Jason Zahra said the resident was confronted by another man who demanded he hand over the keys to his car, which was parked in the driveway.

The resident refused and returned inside, Sergeant Zahra said.

“Not long after a shot was fired into the house,” he said.

The resident was hit with broken glass and received minor injuries.

The offender ran away.

Sergeant Zahra said the 73-year-old resident was “in the wrong place at the wrong time”.

“It’s always best to call the police if you hear something that needs investigating,” he said.

A neighbour said the terrifying incident had rocked the quiet, family friendly street.

The resident, who did not want to be named, said they were woken before dawn by the sound of a gunshot and rang triple-0.

Sergeant Zahra said the shooting was unusual for the Mornington Peninsula.

“We don’t normally get jobs like that out here,” he said.

“There certainly haven’t been any like it recently.”

Crime scene investigators spent hours at the property on Tuesday and were seen taking away at least one evidence bag.

Sergeant Zahra urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a confidential report.
