Plans are in place for a new cricket club in Pakenham.

The Shire of Cardinia and Cricket Victoria are calling on the community “to be a part of history in developing and creating this new inclusive club’’.

It will hold an online public meeting on Wednesday, September 15 to try and get a cricket club up and running at James Bathe Community and Sports Hub.

The club would be situated in a growing area, close to John Henry Primary School and Edenbrook Secondary College, and affiliate with West Gippsland Cricket Association, starting off with a junior section.

WGCA president Rob Hansen said the new club would be a welcomed addition to the local competition.

“I’ve got half a dozen people who’ve already given me their contact details,” he said.

“John Henry Primary School has got 800 kids in it.

“Cricket Victoria and Cardinia Shire want to start a junior blasters group to start off with at least.

“I think there are sufficient kids, if the community organises themselves, to start a junior section of the club at least at this point in time.

“So it will be interesting to see what happens.

“It’s picking up in terms of a message spreading out.”

Hansen said a new club would align with the WGCA’s aspirations to grow, develop and expand.

“That’s part of our mantra, we want to create new clubs in the area as the population grows,” he said.

“We’ve said that for a number of years, we want to get new clubs.

“Cardinia Shire is committed to community clubs rather than super clubs…for communities basically to be represented, that’s the important thing, that the clubs reflect what’s going on in the community.”

The online public meeting will be open for all regardless of experience or involvement in cricket or clubs.

Melanie Pratt, Sports Development Officer from Cardinia Shire Council said: “We are hoping to develop an inclusive and welcoming club, commencing with Woolworths Cricket Blast.”

The online meeting on Wednesday is from 6.30–7.30am. Cost is free.
