MPCA: Mornington teenager Rueben Higgins takes five wickets against Sorrento

Emerging Mornington medium pacer Rueben Higgins collected five wickets to lead a stunning Bulldogs fightback against Sorrento in MPCA Provincial on Saturday.

Emerging Mornington medium pacer Rueben Higgins collected five wickets to lead a stunning Bulldogs fightback against Sorrento in MPCA Provincial on Saturday.

Sorrento lost 6-11 to go from 4-194 to all out for 205, with Higgins (5-12 off 7.4 overs) tearing through the Sharks tail.

“He can make the old ball talk. Great kid,’’ Mornington’s Matt Foon, who took 2-36 off 15, said of 17-year-old Higgins.

Liam O’Connor (77) and Chris King (58) shared a 124-run fifth wicket stand for Sorrento before Cyclone Rueben swept through Alexandra Park.

In reply, Mornington negotiated six overs to be 0-12.

Baxter, inspired by a hostile Chamika Sattambi, ripped apart the Flinders batting line-up to set up a shot at outright victory.

Sent in, Flinders crashed to be all out for 76, with only Blake Hogan-Keogh (26) and Mason Mail (16) reaching double figures. Sattambi bowled with fire to grab 5-26 off 12 overs, supported by Dale Irving (3-11 off 9) and leg-spinner Yohan Maddege (2-15 off 9.5).

Baxter then reached 3-101 off 28 overs before declaring, with Daniel Warwick (57no) and Justin Bridgeman (32no) doing it easily.

Batting again, Flinders was again in trouble, going to stumps at 2-9. Ben Brittain had both wickets.

James La Brooy and John Forrest took four wickets apiece to help Peninsula Old Boys gain the upper hand against Pearcedale.

La Brooy collected a season-best 4-39 off 15.2 overs while Forrest applied substantial pressure with his spinners, taking 4-56 off 30 overs. Matt Cousland (46) and the ever-reliable Kaine Smith (30) did best for Pearcedale. In reply, POB rushed to 0-44 off 11 overs, with Dylan O’Malley on 25 (with 5 fours) and Will La Brooy 16.

Langwarrin 15-year-old Jesse Jewiss made 42 not out at No. 9 to lead a wagging Kangaroos tail against Mt Eliza.

Taylor Smith hit seven boundaries on his way to 59 as Langy cruised to 2-127 before slipping to 7-152 after Justin Grant (3-78) and Nick Baron (3-70) struck. But Jewiss, Riley Davie (23) and Leigh Paterson (24) led a rebuild to help Langwarrin post 246.

In Peninsula, Brad Bailey and Michael Burke combined for a century partnership to help Long Island put up 9-245 against Crib Point.

The pair took the Islanders from a vulnerable 4-61 to 4-166 after Cribby bowlers Glenn Barclay (2-38 off 22 overs) and Mitchell Stansborough (1-39) made early inroads at Ballam Park.

Bailey batted beautifully at No. 6 to score a First XI-best 75, while Burke made 40 in a welcome return to form.

Shayne Gillings (30no), James Paxton (11) and Jake Middleton (16no) made valuable contributions late in the day as Long Island’s hopes of a second straight win rose.

At Eric Bell Reserve, Damien Lawrence (4-34 off 21) and Connor Jackson (3-26 off 18) led a disciplined bowling display as Pines dismissed Moorooduc for 154 in 76 overs. Patrick Jackson (2-42) and Ayden Lacey (1-15) also struck, while Moorooduc opener Ben Williams cracked 60 (with 7 fours). Late in the day, Pines lost a wicket to be 1-4 at stumps.

In Sub District, Nick Taranto hit a career-best 127 after moving to the opening slot to help Tyabb compile 7-234 against Dromana in MPCA Sub District on Saturday.

A patient Taranto faced 250 balls, putting away 16 fours and 1 six, as he notched his sixth century for the Yabbies (three of them have been in the ones and three in Under 17s).

He shared a 103-run opening stand with Aaron Edwards (32 off 134 balls) as Tyabb laid the foundations for a good total.

Aidan Pateman chimed in with a crisp 30, while Dromana’s bowlers stuck to their task, with Zacc Klan (2-78 off 27 overs) and Danny Timmer (3-72 off 30) putting in marathon spells.

Frankston YCW captain Jason Bedford cracked 67 (with 5 fours and 3 sixes) and Andrew Kitson 24 in a total of 156 against Balnarring (1-26). Nathan Kleinig (3-33), Brenton Taylor (3-23), Archie Shepherd (2-36) and Ben King (2-21) shared the wickets for the Saints.

Boneo (5-232 off 38) has already swept to its fifth straight win after dominating Skye (57). Pandas bowlers Cam Williams (3-21), Glen Petersen (3-6) and Sean Spencer (2-7) did the damage.

In District, Matthew Roach blitzed with bat and ball as the Seaford Tigers took a stranglehold on the local derby clash with Seaford.

Roach captured 3-18 and made 74 to lead the Tigers (8-199) to first innings points against Seaford (91).

Former Cranbourne Turf 1 premiership player Jake Harrington also starred for the Tigers, taking 4-33 to spark a Seaford collapse.

With the bat for the Tigers, David James (34), Liam O’Halloran (24) and Jack Brooking (30no) supported Roach.

Delacombe Park opener Jonny Guthrie struck 11 boundaries on his way to 80 as the Parkers put up 224 against Carrum (0-10). Joel Malcolm (33), Rob Fisher (23), Daniel Streker (23no) and Ricky Ramsdale (21) were also in the runs, while Carrum skipper Jake D’Atri sent down 22 overs for a return of 4-63.

Hastings star Luke Hewitt continued his splendid season, grabbing 4-29 off 15 to help dismiss Heatherhill for 175. Pip Heath (46) and Kristian Miller (44) did best with the bat. In reply, Hastings was 0-13, eyeing a third successive win.

*There were some stunning individual performances in other grades.

Delacombe Park’s Aaron Aughtie captured 8-15 in District seconds and James Bolletta took 7-46 for Heatherhill’s A1 side. Josh Burgess smashed 160 and shared a 277-run third wicket partnership with Luke Hodder (100) for Langwarrin in C2, former St Kilda player Jason Jacoby clipped 145no in Mt Martha’s seconds, Long Island stalwart Trevor Ryan made 132no in B2 and Delacombe Park’s Simon Poynton caressed 109 in B1.
