MPCA clubs hope to lure ex-international Cameron White

Could a former Australian cricketer pull on the pads in the Mornington Peninsula association this summer? A couple of local clubs hope so.

He’s probably picked up a fishing rod more than a cricket bat lately.

Former Australian and Victorian cricketer Cameron White has been spotted doing his fair share of fishing around the southern end of the Mornington Peninsula.

He has a place in Sorrento.

It seems a couple of local clubs would love to land the big catch of the off-season and recruit White.

The Flinders Sharks are said to be a White suitor, although club president Dwayne Field tossed cold water on the rumour.

“It’s the first I’ve heard of it. He’s living down Sorrento way isn’t he?” Field said.

“(Our captain-coach) Blake Hogan-Keogh has been working on some piers down there and seen him going out fishing a couple of times.

“I wish he was coming (to us). I might get on to it if that’s the rumour, he might believe it as well. I might have to ring him.”

White’s former Victorian teammate Matt Gale plays at Flinders.

Reigning MPCA Provincial premiers Sorrento — also the Sharks — would be the logical club choice for White.

There’s long been talk of him one day playing with the Sorras, going back to when his ex-state teammate Nick Jewell was playing there.

“I don’t think it’s going to happen, especially with Tugga (Jewell) staying at Long Island,” Sorrento captain Bobby Wilson said.

“I thought if Tugga came back and played with (his son) Will that it might be a chance but, nah, I don’t think it’s going to happen.”

White made a couple of appearances at Sorrento training last season to give a few coaching tips to Will Jewell.

And he has struck up a friendship with Sorrento president Peter Hall, the pair often stopping for a chat in the street.

The former Test player and Australian Twenty20 skipper has captained Melbourne for the past two seasons, in between fulfilling Big Bash League commitments with the Adelaide Strikers.

Meanwhile, there’s been a bit of player movement in the MPCA this week.

Tootgarook has signed Baxter paceman Bobby Parslow and appointed him First XI captain.

He was a Frogs junior.

Dromana announced two key signings: Crib Point all-rounder Waide Symes and Mornington paceman Rueben Higgins.

The pair further bolster a Hoppers side that will be coached by Jack Fowler, who has returned from Premier Cricket.
