He is genuinely excited to get started.

Jason Nagel has been on a high since being appointed Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association general manager and secretary.

He begins the job next Monday.

“Not many people get to work in an industry they love and are passionate about,’’ Nagel said.

“I’m lucky enough at the moment to be about to do that.”

News of Nagel’s appointment was well received; a Facebook post on Monday receiving over 300 likes and a flood of positive comments.

“He will communicate with clubs,’’ MPCA board member Bart Hudgson said.

“He’s got that passion to make it better.’’

Nagel has been involved in Peninsula cricket for over 30 years, in various roles.

He was a champion opening bowler for Rosebud, where he was a 13-time club champion and also coached the Sharks and was club president.

He’s coached Somerville for the past two seasons.

Nagel said he was well equipped for the MPCA job, in which he will liase with clubs and attend various sub-committee meetings.

“I was vice president (of Rosebud CC) when I was 17 so I learnt pretty quick that cricket was more than just playing between one o’clock and six o’clock,” he said.

“You know, you had to go out and do your sponsorship for the club to succeed and promote your juniors and all that. So that was embedded in me from the start.

“And then I was secretary at 18. It threw me in the deep end at the start but it gave me an understanding and an appreciation of what’s required.”

Nagel said he had a strong understanding of how cricket clubs operate.

“I’ve been involved in cricket for over 30 years, of which 23 of them I’ve been on committees, three as president, eight as secretary, eight as a vice president and four just as a general committee member,” he said.

“I’ve also probably coached for 15 of those years as well, juniors and seniors.

“So I understand both sides of it, on and off the field.

“I have a lot of relationships throughout the MPCA built up over time.’’

Nagel will replace Ian Benson, who is retiring after a long and distinguished career in local sports administration.

Nagel is chomping at the bit to get started.

“Initially it will be getting my head around exactly what’s required because there is so much stuff to be done,” he said.

“You’ve got to go to every pennant committee meeting, junior and senior, board meetings, tribunal, umpires meetings and stuff like that just, for the minutes and distribution.

“It will be getting my head around the total job and what’s required…I’m pretty structured, I like to work to calendars and make sure things are well organised.”

MPCA president Stephen Morone said Nagel was armed with the skills to succeed.

“He brings to this role not only his vast cricket background and knowledge, but skills such as planning, strong communication, cost management, procedural and document control, that he has developed in his working career as a project manager with a number of engineering companies,” Morone said.
