Brett Spurr from the Melbourne Bowling Club and Brendan Gallagher from Melbourne Cricket Club fought out a cracking final in the national indoor singles championship qualifying round played at the Karingal Bowling Club’s Skyedome arena last week.
Spurr, one of the state’s most enduring talents and Gallagher, one of its rising stars, engaged in a no-holds-barred final, with Spurr capturing an 8-6, 9-6 straight sets victory.
This championship offers up the possibility of the ultimate sporting fairytale, where any club bowler from any point of the compass can become a world champion without the necessity of currying favour with national selectors and coaches.
Anyone can enter this event where the Victorian winner graduates to the national play-offs at Tweed Heads next August.
Victory in the Australian tournament will see the male and female representatives competing at the IIBC World Indoor Championships in the UK next year against the national champions of more than 25 bowling nations.
Earlier on grand final day Spurr outgunned Brighton’s Thor Shannon 6-3, 6-6, while Gallagher won his start in the final with an emphatic 10-7, 12-6 win in the corresponding semi-final against Frankston’s Lachie Ash.
Following sectional rounds on Day 1, quarter-finals action saw Shannon dominate local veteran Alan Ash 15-3, 16-2, Spurr too accomplished for Rosebud’s Frank Krslovic 11-5, 11-2, Lachie Ash win in a tiebreak over Bundoora’s Liam Turner 5-9, 6-4 3-0 and Gallagher claim the points over local champion Mike Pearce from Mt Eliza 10-7, 12-6.
In all, 42 Victorians came to the Karingal Skyedome to stake their claim for a world title tilt and sporting immortality.
