A MALNOURISHED horse was put down and another one was seized when RSPCA inspectors raided a Cranbourne property yesterday.

Officers attended the property during the morning of August 31 shortly after receiving an emergency report from a member of the public about emaciated horses.

CASEY SECOND IN VICTORIA FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY

RSPCA Victoria Inspectorate team leader Stuart Marchesani said one of the three starving horses couldn’t be saved.

“Another horse was surrendered to RSPCA Victoria and is undergoing veterinary assessment,” he said.

The owner was issued with a legal notice for the third horse to make sure its welfare was not at risk.

Mr Marchesani said he was unable to comment further as the investigation remains ongoing.

This latest case comes after Somerville horse rescuer Cathryn Kelly was sentenced to an 18-month community corrections order in May this year for the deaths of three starving horses.

A court heard the RSPCA raided her Somerville property in April 2017 and found around 50 horses, many severely underweight, and with conditions such as lice, rain scald, fungal infections, lameness, sand ingestation and wounds.

The latest RSPCA figures, released last year, showed Casey ranked second out of Victoria’s 79 local council areas for animal cruelty reports in the 2016-17 financial year.

There were 199 reports about insufficient food, water or shelter, 136 were about husbandry or hygiene, 99 were about underweight animals and 87 were about untreated illnesses.

RSPCA inspectors are authorised under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act to investigate animals that appear to be underweight or emaciated.

People who believe an animal’s life is at immediate risk are urged to call 9224 2222.
