ANIMAL abuse, neglect and cruelty is still happening far too often in the City of Casey, according to the RSPCA.

Casey ranked second out of Victoria’s 79 local council areas for animal cruelty reports, but 50th per capita.

However, the number of reports dropped 23 per cent between 2016 and 2017 — Casey was the top spot for animal cruelty at the end of the 2015-16 financial year.

Dogs and puppies were most likely to suffer abuse and neglect, with 255 reports, 64 reports involved cats and kittens, and 67 involved horses.

There were 199 reports about insufficient food, water or shelter, 136 were about husbandry or hygiene, 99 were about underweight animals and 87 were about untreated illnesses.

Disturbingly, there were 69 reports of beating or tormenting animals, and 40 cases of abandonment.

In one instance, a Narre Warren cat was left with severe, untreated head lesions and was surrendered to the RSPCA.

Dr Liz Walker, said most complaints were about animals not receiving basic care.

“It’s disappointing to see that, for the second year in a row, too many Victorian animals

were reported to us because of concerns about very basic issues: food, water, shelter and

vet care when they’re sick or injured. These kinds of problems are so preventable,” she said.
