A female police officer was assaulted and another kicked and punched during a man’s wild attempt to avoid arrest, a court has heard.
Gavin Connelly told police he was too drunk to remember the alleged violent attack but said he was triggered because officers “wound” him up.
The Dandenong Magistrates Court heard police were called to a Pakenham address on March 11 when a drunken Mr Connelly showed up after downing half a bottle of Wild Turkey bourbon.
Mr Connelly allegedly fought with officers, dislocating the female officer’s thumb and punching and kicking the other officer in the stomach.
The officers managed to haul Mr Connelly into the back of their van, but the female officer was later unable to move her finger which became extremely swollen and bruised.
Magistrate Jack Vandersteen heard the mother was unable to use her right hand for two weeks, causing her to miss out on taking part in activities during a family holiday.
“(However) the victim may have had weakness in her (thumb) ligaments sustained from a previous injury,” the prosecution said.
Mr Vandersteen said there was a legal issue because of mandatory sentencing associated with causing physical injury and asked the prosecution to provide a doctor’s report for the victim to confirm if the finger was dislocated or not.
Mr Connell, whose charges include recklessly cause injury, was bailed and was excused from his next hearing on Thursday.
He will reappear at a later date.
