A Pakenham father threatened to slit the throat of his newborn and “put a bullet” through members of his ex-girlfriend’s family during a terrifying abusive call rampage, a court has heard.

But a remorseful Jake Lambourn told the Dandenong Magistrates Court that what he did was “disgusting” and that he was trying to make himself a “better person”.

The 32-year-old had been drinking when he picked up the phone on May 25 after his ex-girlfriend — who is mother of his children including a nine-week-old baby — sent him a text asking who would take care for their pet dog following their split.

And between 4.30pm and 9.30pm, Lambourn replied with “what about the f****** children” before making 40 Facetime calls to her and threatening to kill them.

“I win, you lose, I’m going to tie you up and slice the baby and kill myself,” the messages read.

“I’ll slit the baby’s throat so you have to kill yourself … all of your family is having a bullet through their heads at 3pm tomorrow.”

Four hours after the drunken calls started Lambourn called the friend of a woman and mother-of-four who he was in a relationship with for three months but did not have children with.

“You f****** c***, I’m going to cause (her) the pain (she) caused me (and) kill (her) parents and myself at 12pm tomorrow,” the messages read.

“(Make the victim) call me by 9pm or everything is done … this is (her) last chance or she’ll see (her children) in a box.”

The fearful victim contacted police in Geelong where a intoxicated Lambourn told them he was “blackout drunk” and had no recollection of the incidents.

“I don’t know what was said or why, but what I said was disgusting … I understand why (I have been arrested),” Lambourn said in a written statement to the court.

“No one deserves those things that I said and I’ll do what I need to do to become a better person.”

Lambourn’s lawyer said his client was drinking to deal with stress caused by the fact he wasn't allowed to meet his baby, which triggered memories of “what became” with his other children.

“There was never any attempt to move beyond the words that were said, he’s a relatively young man who is struggling … the offending occurred on one night,” he said.

Prosecutor and Sen-Constable Monique Oldfield questioned how intoxicated Lambourn could have been as the text messages sent contained “perfect” punctuation complete with emoticons.

“These are serious family violence offences on both occasions with details to kill children,” she said.

The defence said Lambourn, who is a passionate cricket player for his local club and played TAC Cup football for Gippsland Power in his late teens, was not someone who drank alcohol regularly and was prepared to undertake a men’s behavioural change program.

“From a 32-year-old you wouldn’t expect a level of maturity that hasn’t been displayed in this offending,” Magistrate Suzette Dootjes said.

“The offending is serious and nature of calls outrageous … some more time in custody could well be appropriate, in my view.”

Lambourn, who has spent 37 days in custody, pleaded guilty to make threats to kill and will be assessed for a community corrections order on Friday.
