A violent dog has avoided a lethal injection after its owner was hauled before court because of the animal’s savage attack on a man.

The 40-year-old pet owner from Langwarrin was fined $1500 and got to keep his beloved rottweiler after it ravaged a man’s arm in November.

The Frankston Magistrates’ Court heard the victim was walking his dog along Union Rd near Dunmore Cl on November 25 before the unregistered three-year-old — which was approaching on a leash from the opposite direction — launched its attack.

The rottweiler’s owner offered to drive the bleeding victim to hospital but he was taken there by his wife before undergoing intensive surgery to repair deep lacerations on his right arm.

It was also alleged that just three weeks before the sickening attack, the dog escaped from its Dunmore Cl home near Langwarrin Primary School and ran across the road, raising its hackles and baring its teeth at a woman who was forced to scream to make it back off.

The owner was confronted by Frankston City Council officers on November 26 and admitted to the offences after initially denying the dog rush incident from October.

He was convicted for owning a dog that attacked a person causing serious injury.

There were 219 dog attacks reported in 2019 in Frankston and Mayor Sandra Mayer said the council and the community were fed up with people ignoring their responsibilities as pet owners.

“This prosecution should serve as a reminder to all that if you do the wrong thing, there will be repercussions,” she said.

“Dog owners need to be aware of their requirements as a responsible pet owner. In this case the dog’s owner failed to ensure their pet was appropriately registered and contained, which resulted in an attack on a member of the public.

“Council is extremely pleased with the outcome, which was only made possible by the hard work and dedication of enforcement officers who are committed to ensuring our community is safe.”

Frankston City Council has an incentive program to reward owners who undertake obedience training for their dogs. Owners are eligible for ten per cent of the fee back for undertaking obedience training with an approved organisation.
