Noble Park angry alcoholic boyfriend-slapper Jessica Cann jailed for assaults on her partner

Love is not a blind drunk, it seems. An angry Noble Park alcoholic has once again proven she can’t control herself on the sauce.

Jessica Cann has been jailed for assaulting her boyfriend while drunk.
Jessica Cann has been jailed for assaulting her boyfriend while drunk.

An angry alcoholic who slapped and scratched her boyfriend while gooned-up on booze has been jailed for three months.

Jessica Cann was plastered when she attacked her long-term partner.

The Noble Park 38-year-old drunk, who has a long history of similar offending, was told she had done her dash with corrections and now needed to spend some time in jail drying out.

Cann pleaded guilty to unlawful assault, drunk in public and bail breaches at a Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

The court heard on August 15 this year Cann and her boyfriend had been drinking heavily at a neighbour’s house when she became irate.

She launched into her male partner, grabbing him, slapping him in the face and scratching at his eye.

Police were called but she had already left.

When she was found at her nearby home she was slurring her words, smelt strongly of alcohol and unable to be interviewed due to her heavily intoxicated state.

In May she made a call to police saying her boyfriend was assaulting her.

When they attended her home officers found she was extremely inebriated and the partner, who answered the door, had no idea why they were there.

He had not assaulted her.

The court heard Cann has a flag on the police database listing her as someone who is known for making fake calls.

And in February she was caught at a Capel Sound campsite drunk with her boyfriend and a teenage girl.

Police were called and she was arrested and lodged in the drunk tank.

Her defence lawyer said she had “a terrible life” and conceded she had serious issues with alcohol, which was the consistent factor behind all of her offending.

She said Cann had been homeless but recently had the support of a community worker who had found her accommodation and was hoping to get her on a waiting list for a rehab clinic.

She said time served of 31 days would be an appropriate penalty.

But Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said that wasn’t enough.

She said Cann has had three community corrections orders in the past for similar assaults, none of which have changed her behaviour.

“Given her prior history and continual breaches, a month (in jail) is not sufficient,” Ms O’Donnell said.

“Putting her back on a CCO is a waste of resources.

“She is clearly in need of help for her alcoholism.”

Ms O’Donnell said she should be put on a list for rehab as soon as possible so she could attend a clinic straight after release.

Cann was jailed for three months, minus 31 days she had already spent in custody.
