An alleged hoon was caught travelling at a shocking 242km/h during a police operation in Melbourne’s south east.
More than 100 drivers were caught speeding during the four-day Operation Hammerhead which ran from Thursday, July 14 to Monday, July 18.
The operation focused on zeroing in on speeding, distracted driving, impaired and unauthorised drivers, catching 128 motorists travelling over the limit speeding, with 25 losing their licence and eight drug impaired drivers.
The alleged highest detected speed was 242km/h, and police impounded a further 16 vehicles.
Police officers also found 12 drink drivers, with the highest blood alcohol reading allegedly hitting more than twice the legal limit at .133.
Acting Sergeant Harry Lazarou said drivers “should not be complacent”, as “significant and highly visible patrols will continue”.
“The success of the Operation Hammerhead looks likely to have cemented its place permanently on the state highway patrol roster,” he said.
“The number of speeding drivers detected continues to present a significant risk to road users each day.
Mr Lazarou said the message wasn’t for everyone as “most Victorians make smart decisions on the roads”.
“There is still an unacceptable number of motorists who blatantly disregard the safety of others by continuing to speed or driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.”
This operation comes as Victoria’s road toll continues to rise from last year, sitting at 136 deaths as of July 18, a 13.3 per cent increase on this time last year.
