A teenager’s Australia Day cruise along the Mornington Peninsula with mates has landed him in hot water, after police found an extra passenger hiding in the boot.
Somerville Highway Patrol officers checked the car when it pulled into a breath-testing site on the Mornington Peninsula Freeway’s McCRae off-ramp about 5.50pm on Thursday.
They spoke to the driver, who held a P1 license and had four passengers on board, three more than they are legally allowed.
Officers made further checks and opened the boot of the Subaru Impreza, where they found a fifth passenger curled up in the boot, underneath a privacy shade.
P-plates also weren’t found to be displayed on the back of the car.
The driver, an 18-year-old Narre Warren man, had his car impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1200, and is expected to be charged on summons.
The passenger hiding in the boot was also fined $370.
