A Cardinia man with a history of driving while suspended is behind bars after getting repeatedly busted while driving or riding under the influence of meth.

Lang Lang’s Jason Honan, 38, pleaded guilty to four matters at the Ringwood Magistrates Court on Wednesday, which occurred between May 2020 and March 2021.

The court heard Honan had been pulled over by officers on three occasions in the period – on a motorbike with false number plates and a cancelled registration in Carrum Downs on May 26, 2020, and while driving in Burnley and Koo Wee Rup North in March 2021.

In the motorbike incident, he was driving unlicensed and was caught in possession of a small quantity of methamphetamine, and also returned a positive oral fluid test which had detected the drug in his system.

In the two driving incidents, he also returned similar positive drug tests, and the cars he was driving were impounded.

In July 2020, Honan was caught on CCTV driving a white Hino truck and removing panels to break into a factory on Canterbury Rd in Bayswater North.

Police noticed him later that month in similar clothing packing items into a truck in Boronia and photographed him, before arresting him as part of the investigation into the incident in September.

He was on two counts of bail at the time of the offending.

The court heard Honan had four prior convictions for driving while suspended, 10 prior convictions for dishonesty, two community correction orders, and had also been to court over two alleged burglary matters.

Defence lawyer Matthew McLellan said his client was about to commence full-time work and was making “real and genuine” efforts to address his drug usage since the incidents occurred.

He said Honan acknowledged he would be banned from driving but was able to rely on his partner to drive him to work from time to time.

But Magistrate Tony Parsons said Honan was in “deep trouble” due to his continued offending and it had “reached a point where it can’t go on any longer”, with imprisonment the only option.

Mr Parsons sentenced Honan to four months’ jail and convicted him twice for drug driving with a total fine of $800.

Honan, who drove to court, also had his driver’s license cancelled for 12 months from midnight.

Mr McLellan indicated outside the courtroom he would lodge an appeal over his client’s sentence.
