Burglaries happen at an alarming rate in Victoria, with a home hit every 20 minutes.

One in 91 homes in Victoria were burgled in 2018/19, but if you lived in Cardinia, Clyde or Clyde North you had double the chance of having your house broken into.

An analysis of Victorian crime statistics by the RACV shows one in 46 homes were burgled in the last year in the 3978 postcode.

However, residents in Red Hill and Red Hill South slept much easier at night, with only one in 719 homes being broken into last year.

However, other patches of the Mornington Peninsula were much riskier, with a number of suburbs recording above average risk. The Peninsula’s most affluent suburb Portsea had one in 74 homes burgled.

Other popular coastal destinations deemed to be above average risk were Rye, St Andrews Beach, Tootgarook, Rosebud West, Boneo, Cape Schanck, Fingal, Rosebud, Flinders, Merricks, Point Leo and Shoreham.

Further north, Hastings, Tuerong and Moorooduc also recorded above average risk for burglaries.

Inner southeast suburbs Beaumaris, Mentone, Sandringham and Elwood were all low risk, according to the data, while St Kilda and Albert Park ranked above average.

In Victoria non-aggravated burglaries were down 13 per cent since June 2018, while aggravated burglaries dropped 0.3 per cent.

Victoria Police Superintendent Craig Peel said everyone had the right to feel safe in their homes and communities.

“While we welcome any decline in criminal offending, we know offences such as burglary or home invasion have been of concern in recent times and can have significant and long-lasting effects on victims and the wider community,” he said.

“Victoria Police officers and PSOs will continue to proactively target known hot spots and patrol local areas in an effort to detect, disrupt and apprehend offenders and keep the community safe.”
